Bob Ludlam   Doncaster Youth Jazz Orchestra

‘Jazz Scene’ for Thursday 21st August 2008. From C.J.Worsdale.

The nation’s jazz lovers can rejoice that ‘Auntie Beeb’ in her wisdom has re-commenced regular Monday night airings of the ‘Best of Jazz’ series (previously-and incomparably-presented for around 40 years by the late-great Humphrey Lyttelton) and now hosted by jazz singer and pianist Jamie Cullum on Radio Two from 10.30pm to 11.30pm.

Jamie’s debut show kicked off with (perhaps not surprisingly) with a strident feature by fellow vocalist Joe Williams of ‘Get out of my life, woman’ supported by the wonderful Thad Jones/Mel Lewis Orchestra, followed by an impressive selection—chosen mainly from his own collection—and generally favouring more contemporary pieces…Including a number from the famed ‘Art Pepper + 11’ album and a refreshing slant on ‘Wonder wall’(made famous by rock band Oasis) by the Brad Mehldau Trio and proving that jazz musicians can often be inspired by music from other sources without compromising their art. (Just think about the likes of Louis Armstrong and Fats Waller making many a silk purse from sow’s ears ‘pop material’!!).

No doubt there will be many dissenters who may criticise Jamie’s contrasting approach with that of ‘Humph,’ though others will be heartened to welcome the essential listening show back to it’s well deserved slot and wish Jamie as long and successful tenure as his illustrious predecessor !!

A perhaps un-necessary reminder is that the 29th Rotherham Jazz Festival is set to take place in the Clifton Park music marquee (as part of Rotherham Show) on Saturday 6th September and features
the zany-mad-cap and surreal antics of comedy/jazzband Bob Kerr’s Whoopee Band (shades of Spike Jones and his City Slickers!!); The New Orleans Strollers and world renowned star jazz trombonist Roy Williams headlining with his all-star ‘Jazz Friends.’ The show is free and runs from around 1pm to 5.30pm

Further afield and on a much larger scale is the forthcoming Scarborough Jazz Festival (26th to 28th September) with many highly attractive sessions in prospect over the three action packed days. Friday afternoon has the Alcyona Mick Quintet and Free Spirits…Friday evening Tribute to Atlantic Jazz/ BBC Big Band and Clare Teal…Saturday afternoon-Julie Edwards & Kevin Dearden Quintet/ Jamil Sheriff Octet/ Guy Barker Orchestra 1…Saturday evening—Curios:Tom Cawley Trio/ Guy Barker Orchestra 2/ Courtney Pine: A Tribute to Sidney Bechet…Sunday afternoon-Gareth Roberts Quinet/ Tango Siempre / Empirical …and climaxing on Sunday evening with Alan Barnes Ellingtonians and Claire Martin with The Gareth Williams Trio. Phone 01723-357869 for bookings/ticket prices etc or book online at: www.scarboroughjazzfestival.co.uk

Closer to home…Loyal ‘Trad’ supporters of Jazz at the Rockingham Arms (Bennetthorpe) should take notice that the Autumn/Winter season is due to commence on Friday 19th September and will be kick-started by the vibrant Barnsley based seven piece Silver Leaf Jazzband, fronted as ever by dynamic husband and wife clarinets and tenor sax team Dave and Liz Hepworth. The action begins at 8.30pm and admission is £5—pay at the door. ( Also in the pipeline are sessions by The Nicola Farnon Quartet-also featuring James Ludlam on piano and vocals; New Orleans Wiggle & Topsy and The New Jazz Messengers with Shirley Patterson—watch out for up-dates!!)….And avid fans of The Terry Allonby Trio can catch them in superlative action on Saturday 30th August at the Fitzwilliam Arms (12noon to 3pm/ admission free).

Barnsley Jazz at Silkstone Lodge present a ‘Special’ on Monday 25th August with the Harlem Hot Stompers. (8.30pm/ admission £5) .Phone 01226- 281805/ 290105/ 383135.

Sad to note the recent passing of singing star Jo Stafford—one of the final links with the peak of the ‘Swing Era’—who though not considered strictly a ‘Jazz singer’ by some critics, made many fine albums, including ‘Jo plus Jazz’ with many leading West-Coasters….On a happier closing note, however, British band leader/drummer Jack Parnell recently celebrated his 85th birthday …and former Dave Brubeck Quartet star drummer Joe Morello his 80th!! Hearty congratulations to them both!!

Happy jazzin’ !!

‘Jazz Scene’ for Thursday 14th August 2008. From C.J.Worsdale.

The well worn ‘local boy makes good’ cliché would certainly not be misplaced in describing the fortunes of former Doncaster Jazz Orchestra pianist John Escreet , who is currently based in New York…And making a huge impression on the ‘Big Apple’ jazz scene!!

Notably, John’s Union Trio—along with British stars Guy Barker and Ian Shaw—were a great success at The Rochester International Jazz Festival ( in New York State ) and are lined up to participate in the 45th birthday celebrations of one of the USA’s best established performance and jazz education institutions, ‘Jazzmobile.’

Good news for Doncaster area fans however, is that The John Escreet Project is soon to embark on a UK tour, which will include appearances at Gainsborough’s Sands Venue on Friday 26th September, followed by ‘workshops’ at the Northern Jazz Centre (Beckett Road) on the following day. Included in the group are some of New York’s finest musicians: David Binney on alto sax; Ambrose Akinmusire on trumpet: Zack Lober—double bass; and Tyshawn Sorey—drums(Phone 01302-320002 for details)….Providing a rare opportunity to see these great players whilst in the UK, reflecting John’s activities over the past two years in New York. Watch out for updates….we’ll keep you posted!!

Meanwhile, avid live jazz supporters can enjoy the forthcoming guest appearance of swingin’ Sheffield songtress Karen Lake, who combines her considerable vocal talents with the musicianship of the resident Emmerson/ Spragg Combo at Doncaster Conservative Club on Monday 18th August…And an extra lunchtime session by the superb and eclectic Terry Allonby Trio on Saturday 30th August (12 noon to 3pm/ free admission). Loyal Allonby fans should remember however that the threesome have NO session in September—apparently due to a wedding reception at the venue on the first Saturday!!
( Also-- through the grapevine—I hear that Sprotbrough’s Boat Inn is to present live jazz on Thursday 21st August and perhaps on consequent Thursdays if successful enough. Sounds well worth checking out!!).

Central Park/ Café Americana now present live music every Wednesday, featuring CJQ Sextet on every first Wednesday; Jazz-Funk on every third, and guitar maestro Glen McGlone in the company of either jazz singers Fiona Sergison of Jayne Cooper on each second and forth Wednesday.

‘Jazz into Doncaster’ commence their Autumn/ Winter programme at the Rockingham Arms on Friday 19th September with the boisterous seven piece Barnsley based ‘Trad’ outfit The Silver Leaf Jazzband set to get the new season of ‘Jazz at the Rock’ off to a flying start. ( Also set for Rockingham gigs is The Nicola Farnon Quartet with James Ludlam—3rd October, and the band New Orleans Wiggle with jazz vocalist ‘Topsy’—17th October).

Apologies to Edinburgh Jazz Festival sponsor Sir Tom Farmer and all concerned!! In last weeks article I wrongly stated that £3500 had been raised from collections at Princess Street Gardens at nearby Saint Cuthberts Church jazz concerts, towards teenage cancer charities….In fact the figure was much higher at £8500 thanks to donations from big-hearted and generous jazz lovers!! Well done to everyone!!

BBC Radio Three continues to present sterling jazz broadcasts, including Jazz on 3 (11.30pm-1am on Fridays) featuring David Torn’s Prezens—live from London’s Vortex—on 15th August, with the focus on great US bassist Charlie Haden at the 2007 London Jazz Festival on 22nd August…..Jazz Library (10.30pm to 11.30pm-Fridays) featuring Jimmy McGriff (15th Aug)/ Oliver Lake (22nd Aug)/ and Antonio Carlos Jobim (29th Aug)…..Jazz Line-up (Saturdays 4pm to 5pm): Lee Konitz (16th Aug)/ and tribute to the late Alan Ganley with all-star band led by Andy Panayi ( 30th Aug)….Followed of course by Geoffrey Smith’s Jazz Record Requests-- Get tuned in !!

Barnsley Jazz at Silkstone Lodge (Cone Lane, Silkstone) presents The Southside Jazzband (Mon 18th Aug); and The Harlem Hot Stompers (Mon 25th Aug). Phone 01226-281805 / 290105 / 383135…And Rotherham Transport Club present live jazz (usually ‘Trad’) every Monday evening. (Phone 01709-562943 for information).

Happy jazzin!!

‘Jazz Scene’ for Thursday 7th August 2008. From C.J.Worsdale.

Good news from local ‘Just one more time’ re-union session organiser John Shillito--that took place in April-- is that sales of CD’s and DVD’s of the memorable event continue at a steady flow and have resulted in another donation of £126 being made to Cancer Research…And further pleasing news is that plans are in motion (in conjunction with former Doncaster jazz pianist John ‘Buck’ Butler—now resident in London) for the highly successful event to be repeated next April!! (Fingers crossed!!).

John also informs that on the CD of Radio Sheffield broadcasts, with trumpeter Alan Hippsley and Yesterdays Men, were some tracks featuring the late-great Nat Gonella—which Alan received permission to use from Nat’s daughter Natilie, who was sent a complimentary copy of the recording and was kind enough to make a generous donation to the worthy cause. ( Any one wishing to purchase recordings, DVD’s or other memorabilia can contact John Shillito on john@himark.co.uk ).

Whilst on the topic of jazz music raising funds for worthy charities…. Kwik Fit founder Sir Tom Farmer (a sponsor of the 30th Edinburgh Jazz Festival, which I recently attended) was able to announce that a total of £3,500 was collected from the Sunday afternoon concert in Princess Street Gardens and the evening Jazz and Gospel Service at nearby St.Cuthbert’s Church, which featured New Orleans jazz singer Topsy Chapman with clarinettist Orange Kellin’s Blues Serenaders and donated to help towards making life more tolerable and pleasant for teenage cancer sufferers. Nice to know that jazz fans are big hearted enough to offer valuable support to other worthy causes—as well as their favourite music!!
( Those planning on visiting Auld Reekie over coming months, might like to make a note of Edinbugh Jazz n, Jive Club, that presents weekly ‘Trad’ sessions with -two bands-and a special guest band each month. There is an excellent bar and plenty space for dancing….So if you are making a visit, contact Norrie on 0131-312-8243, email: info@edinburghjazz.com or see the website: www.edinburghjazz.com ).

Tonight at Sheffield Central Library Theatre, clarinettist Evan Christopher-from New Orleans—presents Django a la Creole, along with David Blenkhorn and Dave Kelbie (guitars) and Sebastien Girardot (double bass)….Who collectively performed at the recent Edinburgh Jazz Festival. The band has an innovative concept, including fresh arrangements of the gypsy swing music of Django Reinhardt, fused with New Orleans and Creole rhythms. “A forthright sound and a hungry energy” says the New York Times!! The concert begins at 7.30pm and tickets (£10/£8 conc’s) are available from Jack’s Records, The Bohemian and www.wegottickets

Set for her debut session at Doncaster Conservative Club as guest of the Emmerson/ Spragg combo on Monday 18th August is glamorous Sheffield based jazz singer Karen Lake, a highly popular attraction in and around the City of Sheffield with a variety of groups from duos and trios to the Impressions Quintet. Many ‘Donny’ jazz lovers will know Karen from her previous two guest sessions at the Fitzwilliam Arms with the Terry Allonby Trio…And shouldn’t miss the opportunity to catch her in superlative singing action with Dickie, Tony and Co!! The show begins at 8.30pm and admission is £3-50 at the door.

Faithful fans of the Terry Allonby Trio are advised that August sees a second lunchtime session on Saturday 30th August (12 noon to 3pm/ admission free) and are reminded that there will be NO gig in September at the popular venue.

Barnsley Jazz at Silkstone Lodge (Cone Lane, Silkstone) presents New Orleans Wiggle with Topsy
(Aug 11th) and The Southside Jazzband (Aug 18th): 01226-281805 / 290105/ 383135…And There is also jazz every Monday at Rotherham Transport Club : Phone 01709-562943 for details.

Happy jazzin’ !!

‘Jazz Scene’ for Thursday 31st July 2008. From C.J.Worsdale.

Perhaps best known throughout the UK as lead alto and multi-reed star musician with the highly renowned Nick Ross Orchestra, recent ‘Con’ Club featured guest artist Alan Ladds was enabled to spotlight his impressive and enviable solo improvising technique to it’s full extent—away from the relative confines of Big Band swing—when he joined forces with the resident Emmerson/Spragg Combo at the popular venue.

Son of arranger father Cecil and brother of late guitarist brother Ken, Sheffielder Alan’s musical pedigree also includes periods with the National Youth Jazz Orchestra, the Syd Lawrence Orchestra and freelancing on the London jazz scene—plus occasional gigs with singing star Alice Coulham and others at The Lescar in Sheffield….when free from touring commitments to the Nick Ross Orchestra.

At his Conservative Club debut gig, Alan immediately raised audience ears and eyebrows on the opening ‘Days of wine and roses’—refreshingly performed on clarinet ( a somewhat neglected instrument in Modern Jazz circles), before switching to tenor sax on a blistering-no-prisoners-taken rendition of the flag-waver ‘Cherokee’ ( reminiscent of tenor titans Michael Brecker and Dexter Gordon)—which prompted guitarist Dickie to wave the white flag (a handy super market bag) in mock surrender!!

Happily, Alan’s fluent liquid clarinet virtuosity (plus flute features) were well to the fore throughout the session—notably on ‘Sunny side of the street’ and his rhapsodic ballad style (on tenor sax again) did great justice to ‘Body and soul’ and Thelonius Monk’s famed ‘Round Midnight’—with Dickie equally sublime and impressive on vocal, before reverting back to ultra-up-tempo abrasiveness on ‘Just friends.’

Hopefully, Alan’s breathtaking debut will ensure a swift return to the ‘Con’ Club and perhaps result in invitations by John Ellis MBE (who came straight from finalising DJO’s latest CD at London’s Abbey Road Studios to catch Alan in action) to guest with Doncaster Jazz Orchestra…Meanwhile, watch out for chances to catch him in 40’s swing mode with the Nick Ross Orchestra!!

References to the clarinet remind that Evan Christopher presents Django a la Creole at Sheffield Central Library on Thursday 7th August (doors open at 7pm) in the company of David Blenkhorn and Dave Kelbie (guitars) and Sebastien Girardot (bass). Though I am personally unfamiliar with Evan’s playing—Ahmet Ertegun, the founding chairman of Atlantic Records, says that “ Evan is, in my estimation, not only the greatest jazz clarinettist alive, but one of the greatest of all time.” Which may be sufficient tempt avid fans of the style to attend the session!! (Visit www.lejazzetal.com for further information).

August dates at Doncaster Conservative Club for the Emmerson/Spragg Combo are on Monday 4th
( with guest singers Sheila Peach, Eddie Kell and Bob Quinn also expected along) and on Monday 18th---when special guest will be the delightful and swingin’ jazz singer Karen Lake.

‘Jazz into Doncaster’ Rockingham Arms sessions are set to re-commence on Friday 19th September, when the Autumn/Winter season will be kick-started by Barnsley’s seven piece Silver Leaf Jazzband…
…followed by the Nicola Farnon Quartet (with James Ludlam—piano & vocals) on Friday 3rd October and New Orleans Wiggle with vocalist ‘Topsy’ on Friday 17th October. Get the dates in your diaries!!

Barnsley Jazz at Silkstone Lodge present the Yorkshire Stompers (4th Aug) and New Orleans Wiggle with ‘Topsy’ (11th Aug)—Phone 01226-281805 / 290105 / 383135….And Rotherham Transport Club also offer different (usually ‘Trad’) attractions every Monday night. (Phone 01709-562943 for up-dates).

Happy jazzin’!!

‘Jazz Scene’ for Thursday 24th July 2008. From C.J.Worsdale.

If asked to name Dublin’s finest export to our area, most probably many would emphatically answer “Guinness-of course!!” without hesitation…However aficionados of jazz guitar might well plump for the six string wizardry of Glen McGlone, who is now a firmly ensconced and popular figure on our local music scene.

Glen’s first stumbling attempts at guitar playing began at the tender age of three, and by his mid-teens his mastery of the instrument had impressively developed—enabling him to make his mark on the lively Dublin music scene, where he performed regularly and absorbed numerous varied influences before moving to London in his twenties in search of (he jokes) a ‘proper’ job—temporally shelving his public guitar playing activities.

Happily, Glen’s love of music (particularly jazz) was re-kindled on moving North to Doncaster, when he recommenced guitar studies at Doncaster College under the expert guidance of Terry Allonby—who Glen gratefully sites as his mentor—also naming Wes Montgomery, Earl Klugh and Britain’s Martin Taylor as major influences and inspirations.

Since then he as become a well known, much admired and welcome musician locally, who can currently be appreciated and enjoyed on every 2nd and 4th Wednesday of each month playing sumptuous and swinging guitar at Central Park / Café Americana (Lazarus Court-Doncaster) along with glamorous song-smiths Jayne Cooper and Fiona Sergison contributing fine honed versions of favourite standards, swaying bossa-novas and other ‘quality’ songs at the sessions on opposite weeks.
…Check ‘em out soon—perhaps enjoying a glass or two of Guinness also, to add to the pleasure!!

Former Doncaster pianist John ‘Buck’ Butler—now based in London—regularly sends bulletins from the capitol which are always fascinating to read…His latest telling of former young Doncaster Jazz Ochestra virtuoso pianist John Escreet who his making his mark in the Big City and recently performed at a St.Pancras jazz club with the Ben Van Gelder Quartet…And reports that apparently a Youth Jazz Orchestra was active in Doncaster around 1955 (preceding the establishment of Doncaster Youth Jazz Association—founded by John Ellis) that rehearsed in Doncaster Technical College. ‘Buck’ would much appreciate receiving further information of the orchestra from anyone re-calling it’s activities—either by writing to his home address (27 Cowick Road,London SW17) or phoning on 0208-767-1338.

Doncaster Conservative Club presents the Emmerson/Spragg Combo- with guest singers Sheila Peach,
Bob Quinn and Eddie Kell expected to be in attendance—on Monday 4th August and again on Monday 18th August, when the delightful jazz songstress Karen Lake ( who has twice guested at Terry Allonby sessions at the ‘Fitz’) will be the most welcome star guest of the evening.

The Terry Allonby Trio will be in action twice in August at the ‘Fitz’ (on Saturdays 2nd and 30th)….
Though fans should remember that there will be NO September 6th gig—apparantly due to a private function at the pub.

Both Rotherham Transport Club and Silkstone Lodge (Barnsley) consistently attract high Monday night jazz attendances, which are fully expected to continue to flourish with such attractions as The Heart of England Jazzband at the former and Peter Franks’ Dixieland All-stars at Silkstone. Both foot-stomping sessions are set for Monday 28th July….. Happy jazzin’ !!

‘Jazz Scene’ for Thursday 17th July 2008. From C.J.Worsdale.

The heartiest of congratulations are due to local jazz guitar ‘guru’ Terry Allonby (who’s remarkably dexterous and soulful musicianship has graced the South Yorkshire scene since the 70’s) to mark the occasion of his recent 65th birthday—which was well and truly celebrated at the Fitzwilliam Arms, firstly on 5th July at his Trio’s monthly session and again last Tuesday by a gathering of admiring friends and relations at the popular venue.

At the Saturday lunchtime gig, the Trio’s always pleasing and varied offerings were further enhanced by worthy contributions by guitarist ( and Allonby protégé ) Richard Taylor, who impressively dueted with maestro Terry on the appropriately titled Jon Scofield/Pat Metheny composition ‘Everbody’s Party’ followed by ‘So What.’ And by young and frequent ‘sitter-in’ Lee Tinkler with confidently expressive renditions —of ‘Watch what happens’/ ‘Cantaloupe Island’/ and Metheny piece‘James.’

Also, keyboards wizard Nigel Chapman brought the packed audience to respectful silence with his poignant solo version of ‘Somewhere before’ in remembrance of influential Swedish jazz pianist Esbjorn Svensson , who recently tragically died in a scuba diving accident at the premature age of 44.

The memorable session ended with an extended soulful version of ‘Jean Pierre’ –together with audience participation hand clapping responces—and a brisk outing on Jon Scofield’s ‘Sissy Strut’ completed another highly enjoyable musical experience.

Before moving on….Overheard at the ‘Fitz’, news is that guitarist Glen McGlone now appears at Central Park (Café Americana) –Lazarus Court-on every 2nd and 4th Wednesday. Either in the illustrious company of jazz singing divas Fiona Sergison or Jayne Cooper---Also harmonica player John McKevitt is expected to sit-in at the venue on 16th July and regularly on subsequent 3rd Wednesdays with jazz/funk band 110th Street. All well worth catching when you can!!

Representing ‘Jazz into Doncaster’, committee stalwart Malcolm Silverwood reports that Doncaster Jazz Orchestra’s Jubilee Big Band Spectacular at Doncaster Minster was a highly successful capacity attracting event and featured many contributions from star guest soloists and current band members

Particularly striking to Malcolm were Dennis Rollins’ finely controlled trombone rendition of ‘Someone to watch over me’—reminiscent of the great Tommy Dorsey—pianist Andy Vinter’s tribute to Oscar Peterson with his own composition ‘One for Oscar and superb high spots from trumpeter Mark White, trombonists Peter Beachill and Stuart Garside, Reuben Fowler on flugehorn, Mark Ellis on soprano sax and tenor saxist Ben Mallinder’s outstanding and heartfelt version of the late Bob Florence’s composition ‘Autumn.’ ( Also making an honorary appearance-though not performing-was veteran Doncaster born star guitarist Judd Proctor, who won a regional Melody Maker contest with The Zetland Players and went on to international acclaim with Ray Ellington’s Quartet—of Goon’s Show fame—recorded with Benny Goodman and worked with Stanley Black, Don Lusher and other major jazz luminaries)

Disappointingly –and surprisingly-The Dizzy Club’s normally jam packed appearance at the Rockingham Arms was relatively poorly attended (probably suffering from the same night clash of gigs with DJO!!), despite thrilling and impressive contributions from all concerned—who ironically had played to a crowd of around 2000 on the previous evening in Sheffield!! Organisers ‘Jazz into Doncaster’ promise that the ‘Dizzies’ will be back at the ‘Rock’ pretty soon and trust that their customary legion of usually loyal fans will return to the fold in force!!
At Doncaster Conservative Club on Monday 21st July is special guest saxophonist Alan Ladds along with the resident Emmerson/Spragg Combo….Rotherham Transport Club presents The Southside Jazzband (21st July) and The Heart of England Jazzband (28th)….At Silkstone Lodge (Cone Lane/Silkstone/Barnsley) is The Tame Valley Stompers (21st July) and Peter Franks’ Dixieland All-stars (28th)….And a note for your diaries is Saturday 6th September, when the 29th Rotherham Jazz Festival is set to take place at Clifton Park—with Bob Kerr’s Whoopee Band, The New Orleans Stollers and Roy Williams & His Jazz Friends heading the bill.

Happy jazzin’ !!

‘Jazz Scene’ for Thursday 10th July 2008. From C.J.Worsdale.

An all too rare visit to Central Park/Café Americana to catch the resident band ‘CJQ’ (who are the regular attraction at the venue on every first Wednesday) in superlative action, proved to be no disappointment, leaving me more than eager to drop in again at the earliest opportunity!!

The nucleus of the band usually includes sax maestro Mark Ellis (alto/tenor/soprano), Simon Nixon
(trumpet/flugelhorn), Stuart Garside (trombone), Emlyn Vaughan-from Buxton-(double bass), Ian West (drums), and ‘elder statesman’ of the outfit Ken Morton—also a gifted arranger—on piano….All collectively serving widely varied and intriguing sets of jazz standards and contemporary pieces. From tender ballads such as Autumn leaves and a jaunty Foggy day in London town and a bristling Work Song to an utterly captivating (and probably unique) treatment of the old ‘warhorse’ Sweet Georgia Brown, taken at a leisurely paced tempo with a down-home shuffling New Orleans style parade band like infectious beat—that niftily transforms the 1920’s ‘flapper’ depicted in the song to a definite 21st century swingin’ hip chick!!

Numerous other worthy high-spots included a crackling rendition of the aptly titled This could be the start of something big, by undoubtedly future young trombone stars Jack Tabner and Dan Jones—who’s daring and articulate phrasing evokes memories of the jazz greats Kai Winding and JJ Johnson.
(Who are-apparently-a huge influence on Jack and Dan)….And adding to the ‘jam-session’ atmosphere were several eager and highly proficient ‘sitters-in’ including pro trumpeter Danny Hammerton (known to Doncaster area audiences through work with his own band and with Bob Ludlam and The Syd Lawrence Orchestra at ‘Donny’ Civic Theatre)…and a piano talent to watch out for—19 year old Angus Bailey from Burghwallis.

Hopefully, appetites will be sufficiently whetted to tempt newcomers to sample the great music on offer at the prestigious venue at Lazarus Court from around 8pm till late. Admission is free—though reservations are essential for intending diners. Phone 01302-815503 or E-mail relax@centralparkrestaurant.co.uk for information. (Fans of live Funk are reminded that their favourite music is also on offer on every 3rd Wednesday with the electrifying band 110th St). Make a date!!

Regular South Yorkshire jazz attractions include The Knights of Jazz (usually featuring Pete Moxon,
Gerry Nugent and/or Graham Galtrey on saxes and clarinet) every Monday at the Butcher’s Arms –Braithwell….Dave Brennan’s Jubilee Jazzband on Wednesdays at the Three Horseshoes (Wickerley)
…and The Silver Leaf Jazzband also on Wenesdays at the Strafford Arms, Stainborough (Barnsley).

Sheffield based tenor sax star Alan Ladds ( who is highly recommended by no less than Doncaster Jazz Association founder and Musical Director John Ellis MB) makes his guest debut with the resident Emmeron/Spragg Combo at Doncaster Conservative Club on Monday 21st July. The music kicks-off around 8.30pm and admission is £3-50 at the door.

Further afield (though well worth the journey) is a concert at Hull Truck Theatre on 28th July, starring
Jazz singing sensation Stacey Kent and husband Jim Tomlinson’s Quintet. Phone 01482-323638 for further details.

Great news is that Doncaster Jazz Orchestra have completed their next CD album in London at Abbey Road Studios (of Beatles fame) ….Though on a poignant note, whilst actually recording a version of Autumn by US Big Band leader/composer/arranger and great friend and inspiration to the Jazz Association Bob Florence, devastating news of the great man’s death was passed onto John Ellis.
Fortunately, however, Bob’s many great compositions will be kept alive through inclusion in the vast repertoire of many superb international jazz orchestras—our very own DJO included!! (Watch out for news of availability of the CD—which will also serve as a fitting memory to the late Bob Florence).

BBC Radio Three presents Jazz Library on Friday 11th July (10.30pm to 11.30pm) with the spotlight on the late-great –but sadly short lived- trumpet sat Lee Morgan (of Art Blakey’s Jazz Messengers fame)
…Followed at 11.30pm by Jerry Dammer’s Spatial AKA Orchestra in concert at Cheltenham, devoted to the late controversial jazz renegade Sun Ra. Sounds fascinating stuff—tune in if you can!!

Happy jazzin’ !!

‘Jazz Scene’ for Thursday 3rd July 2008. From C.J.Worsdale.

Divided loyalties and hard choices may have to be settled by the toss of coins regarding the choice of which two highly attractive jazz gigs-- both regretfully taking place on the same evening in Doncaster on Friday (4th July)-- to attend!!

No doubt many fans would love to be able to catch both The Dizzy Club and Doncaster Jazz Orchestra in action at their respective venues at the Rockingham Arms and in the hallowed surroundings of Doncaster Minster for DJO’s Jubilee Jazz Spectacular …But even the Wisdom of Solomon would be unable to solve that quandary, though optimistically and deservedly both sessions will draw capacity attendances.

The ‘Dizzies’—as they are affectionately known—are regular and highly popular visitors to the ‘Rock’ and are fully expected to thrill and delight once again with their unique brand of Swing Era based material, featuring numerous great songs from the pens of Gershwin, Porter, Sammy Kahn and other legendary tunesmiths right up to present times and the likes of Van Morrison—plus intriguing numbers by lead vocalist and rhythm guitarist John Naylor ( Sweet Loretta Jones etc) and other band members.
Joining John under the spotlights will be Patrick Walker—dazzling on hot violin, guitar and sharing vocal honours; Mike Fleming—on the mighty double bass; and Caroline Boaden—laying down irresistible rhythms from the drum kit!! The action begins at 8.30pm and entry is £5 at the door.
( This session will be the final gig at the ‘Rock’ until 19th September—when The Silver Leaf Jazzband
launch the Autumn/Winter programme— including Nicola Farnon’s Quartet and New Orleans Wiggle and Topsy in the pipeline).

Starting at the earlier time of 7.30pm, Big-Band aficionados may well decide to gravitate to the beautiful ( and acoustically compatible ) surroundings of Doncaster Minster (formerly St.George’s Church) , where the dynamic and world renowned Doncaster Jazz Orchestra –directed by John SM Ellis MBE—will be raising the rafters with finely honed versions of both well loved vintage Big Band Swing Classics and more recent contemporary compositions ….With the added attraction of star guest soloists Peter Beachill and Dennis Rollins (trombones), Andy Vinter (piano), and Mark White (trumpet). Tickets at £13 adults / £10 conc’s / £6-50 under 16’s are available from the Civic Theatre Box Office (01302-343349); Frenchgate Tourist Information Centre; and from the Northern Jazz Centre, Beckett Road (01302-320002).

Continuing the local jazz action on Saturday 5th July at the Fitzwilliam Arms (Shotton Walk/ Balby Bridge flats area) frm 12 noon to 3pm, will be the superb Terry Allonby Trio –featuring Terry himself on guitars; Nigel Chapman (keyboards); and Mick Yates (drums)….Who collectively will be offering a wide range of stimulating sounds, encompassing jazz standards, blues, rock, be-bop, Latin, original compositions and intriguing versions of popular tunes by the likes of the Beatles, Paul Simon etc—all with the magic Allonby ingredient !! ( Also, surprise guest ‘musos’ often sit-in at the session).

Also taking place this weekend (from 4th to 6th July) is the 17th Doveholes International Beer & Jazz Festival—including Amy Roberts New Orleans Quartet, The Incredible Bibbington Limeburners Parade Band, Ged Hones Lewis / Colyer Band, Ken Sim’s Rhythm Kings, New Orleans Heat, and The Savannah Jazzband….For further details phone 01298-814722.

Doncaster Conservative Club presents The Emmerson/ Spragg Combo on Monday 7th July (8.30pm/ admission £3) –featuring Dickie Emmerson on guitar and vocals—and no doubt with messrs Sheila Peach, Eddie Kell and Bob Quinn also further enhancing the swingin’ proceedings with many a well crafted song!! ( The Combo are back at the club on 21st July along with special guest sax man Alan Ladds).

At the Phoenix Sports & Social Club (Brinsworth / Rotherham) on 14th July it’s ‘Swingtime’ with The Colin Yates Big Band—featuring Pete Farmery (vocals), who invite you to dance or just listen to the vibrant and swingin’ sounds!! The show begins at 8pm and admission is £5 ( 01709-363788).

Barnsley Jazz at Silkstone Lodge (Cone Lane-Silkstone) presents The Silver Leaf Jazzband (7th July)
And Spirit of New Orleans (14th July). Phone 01226-281805 / 290105 / 383135…..And there is regular Monday evening jazz at Rotherham Transport Club also. (Phone 01709-551478 for details).

Happy jazzin’ !!

‘Jazz Scene’ for Thursday 26th June 2008. From C.J. Worsdale.

Despite recent flurries of behind the scenes activity in attempts to re-schedule the forthcoming Rockingham Arms session by the ever popular Sheffield based band The Dizzy Club in order to avoid a regrettable clash with Doncaster Jazz Orchestra’s Jubilee Concert at Doncaster Minster on the same evening. Unfortunately the problem could not be resolved-- therefore both gigs will go ahead on Friday 4th July—leaving local jazz supporters with the dilemma of which worthy event to attend!!

Even considering the quandary created for loyal fans, both sessions are deserving of attracting full houses as they usually do, with The Dizzy Club once again fielding the dynamic and vibrant foursome of John Naylor (vocals/rhythm guitar); Patrick Walker (violin/guitar/vocals); Mike Fleming (double bass); and Caroline Boaden (drums), with their unique and entertaining slant on Swing Era based material and songs from ‘The Great American Song Book’ to more recent standards from the pens of such notable figures as Van Morrison and band originals also. The ‘Dizzies’ swing into action at the ‘Rock’ around 8.30pm and admission is £5 at the door.

Across town at Doncaster Minster (formerly St.George’s Church) the magnificent surroundings and superb acoustics are expected to further enhance the legendary reputation of the mighty Doncaster Jazz Orchestra in full cry under the guiding leadership of Director and founder John SM Ellis MBE, along with guest soloists including stars of trombone Dennis Rollins and Peter Beachill, Andy Vinter at the piano and Mark White on trumpet. The concert begins at 7.30pm and tickets (£13 adults/ £10 conc’s/
£6-50 under 16’s) are available from Civic Theatre Box Office—phone 01302-342349 and from the Tourist Information Centre in the Frenchgate Centre. Further information is also available by calling the Northern Jazz Centre on 01302-320002.

Close on the heals of the ‘Dizzies’ and DJO comes the eagerly awaited monthly session by guitar maestro Terry Allonby’s Trio ( with Nigel Chapman-keyboards and Mick Yates-drums), who are set to hold court at the Fitzwilliam Arms ( Shotton Walk/ Balby Bridge flats area) on Saturday 5th July from 12 noon to 3pm—with admission free as always. As regulars will be well aware, the repertoire and styles of music on offer by Terry and the boys is always wide ranging and brimming with surprises.
If you’ve not yet sampled the ‘Allonby experience’ , advice is to pop along to the ‘Fitz’ and give it a try
…chances are that you’ll soon be transformed into an avid fan!!

Monday night sessions by The Emmerson/Spragg Combo at Doncaster Conservative Club are set for 7th July—when usual welcome guest vocalists Sheila Peach, Bob Quinn and Eddie Kell are expected to be contributing several finely delivered songs….And on 21st July, when special guest will be newcomer to the venue, saxophonist Alan Ladds. ( Also making her debut at the club on 18th August will be delightful Sheffield based jazz singer Karen Lake, who has previously guested at the ‘Fitz’ with Terry Allonby…Get the dates in your diaries!!).

In addition to forthcoming Jazz Festivals mentioned in last week’s column, other attractive festivals well worth considering are: Wigan International Jazz Festival from July 11th to 19th, which includes Guy Barker’s Big Band ‘Amadeus Project’; Empirical ( who recently played Doncaster's Central Park/Café Americana venue); Doncaster’s very own trombone star Dennis Rollins fronting The Wigan Youth Jazz Orchestra; plus Ian Shaw, Alan Barnes and Jim Mullen and many more. ( Phone 01942-825677 / www.wiganjazz.net )…..Whitley Bay International Jazz Festival (11th to 13th July) tends more towards Traditional and Swing Era styles and includes Matthias Seuffert’s Buck Clayton Legacy Band;

‘Jazz Scene’ for Thursday 19th June 2008. From C.J.Worsdale.

Further to recent announcements of the ever welcome return to the Rockingham Arms (Bennetthorpe) of the popular Potteries based Old Fashioned Love Band, eager ‘Trad’ avids are reminded once again to turn out in considerable force tomorrow evening (Friday 20th June) for what promises to be another highly enjoyable and memorable session of foot-stomping-rafters-raising hot jazz sounds!!

Loyal regulars of the venue are fully expected to be in enthusiastic attendance, though if you’re among those who enjoy traditional jazz on record but don’t usually attend ‘live’ gigs, the perhaps the OFLB session might be suitable enough temptation to experience the ‘real thing’ !!

The line-up of the band is expected to be Mike Pembroke on lusty trombone and vocals, Mel Hill on cornet and vocals (who also pens some original compositions), Mike Turner—clarinet/ soprano/ and alto saxophones, Jake Reeves on six string banjo/guitar/vocals, Finnish born Harri Forelius on double bass, and with Dave Timmis pushing along the irresistible rhythms from behind his drum kit!!

Stomp-off time is at 8.30pm and admission at the door is £5………See you all there!!

Next up at Doncaster Conservative Club (South Parade) is special guest star jazz singer Loretta Scott, who joins forces once again with the resident Emmerson/ Spragg Combo—featuring (of course) Dickie Emmerson on guitar and vocals , Tony Spragg at the keyboards and the sonorous ‘walking’ bass of Tony Durkin… All providing superb accompaniment to Loretta’s finely honed and swingin’ renditions of many well loved jazz ‘standards’—with which she so often delights audiences across the UK and on the Continent at clubs, festivals and even on cruse liners!! The show begins at 8.30pm and admission is £3-50 at the door.

The Jazz Festival season is now in full swing, with attractive events taking place at the 23rd International Oliver Cromwell Jazz Festival at Upton-upon-Severn/ Worcestershire (27th to 29th June)

878642 among the numerous Festivals to tempt jazz lovers to experience the fun, atmosphere and thrill
of such events ….especially if the weather remains ‘clement’ !!

The legions of fans of the late-great iconic trumpeter and singer Chet Baker , will be delighted to learn that although completed twenty years ago and remaining un-available for most of that time ( if my memory serves me well, I recall seeing an airing on probably Channel 4 TV some time back, the monochrome documentary film ‘Let’s Get Lost’ is currently on release (though probably not to be seen at our local ‘flicks’!!). Admirers of the legendary jazz star can however keep a keen eye open for opportunities to catch the movie or perhaps purchase or hire the DVD !!

Sadly—and with depressing regularity —the recent passing of major jazz luminaries continues and leaves gaping voids in the international music scene. Among those great figures to recently pass on are the superb modern jazz drummer/composer/arranger Alan Ganley ( who-if I’m not mistaken-once played at Cantley’s ‘Two Palfreys’ back in the 60’s with the famed Tubby Hayes Quintet); tenor sax titan Danny Moss (who’s impeccable jazz pedigree included working with Ted Heath, Humph—notably at Doncaster Danum Hotel-- and Alex Welsh and making appearances at Nice and other major Festivals with leading American jazz stars); plus—thanks to drumming ace John Petters for passing on the tragic news—much loved trombonist and radio presenter Campbell Burnap also recently passed away unexpectedly after a short illness. Campbell was also well known to South Yorkshire audiences, having played with the Campbell Burnap/Ron Drake Quintet at the NCB Lodge Jazz Club in Doncaster and at Rotherham Jazz Festival with The Alex Welsh Re-Union Band….. We’ll miss them all.

Ending on a more cheerful note….Barnsley Jazz at Silkstone Lodge (Cone Lane/Silkstone) presents Winston’s Pennine Jazz ( 23rd June) and The Phoenix Jazzmen with Shirley Patterson (30th June)—01226-281805 / 290105 / 383135…… Rotherham Transport Club have the Old Fashioned Love Band
(23rd June) and Mart Rogers’ Manchester Jazz (30th June): phone 01709-551478….And EVERY Monday at Braithwell’s Butchers Arms you can catch The Knights of Jazz in action—often featuring Pete Moxon, Gerry Nugent and/ or Graham Galtrey on saxes and clarinet.

Happy jazzin’ !!

‘Jazz Scene’ for Thursday 12th June 2008. From C.J.Worsdale.

Re-established back in the Spring of 2002 following a successful ‘one-off’ gig in which Stockport based trombonist Mike Pembroke joined forces with five jazz musicians from the Potteries and ‘too lazy’ to come up with a suitable title the Old Fashioned Love Band—named after the Stoke on Trent group of the 1960’s—was resurrected by majority vote….And the rest, as they say, is history!!

Originally, the newly re-formed outfit based it’s approach on the music of Ken Colyer, Bunk Johnson, George Lewis and other established New Orleans style musicians. Though as the band widened it’s geographical appearances, so did it’s repertoire—which nowadays, whilst not neglecting Classic Jazz styles, is just as likely to include obscure –though intriguing-tunes from the 1920’s to original compositions from the pen of cornet player Mel Hill.

As a happy result of musical developments, the OFLB have extended their appeal to jazz audiences as far apart as Scotland and the South Coast—appearing regularly around the UK at venues as diverse as major Jazz Festivals, Village Halls, small theatres and most importantly jazz clubs—such as the Rockingham Arms at Bennetthorpe/ Doncaster, where they will be the eagerly awaited attraction on Friday 20th June!!

The full line-up is expected to include Mike Pembroke (trombone/vocals)—also renowned for his work with the Mike Pembroke Seven that often worked as supporting band for the late-great Humphrey Lyttelton, including appearance at the famed 100 Club in London; Mel Hill (cornet/vocals), who began his jazz career with the Ceramic City Stompers and who’s influences extend from Bunk Johnson to Bobby Hackett; Mike Turner (clarinet/ soprano & alto saxes), who became hooked on jazz at the tail-end of the ‘Trad-boom’ and can justly boast of sharing the stand with the great trumpeter Bruce Adams; Jake Reeves (banjo/guitar/vocals), an original OFLB member who is a skilled rhythm guitarist and Blues player also; Harri Forelius (double bass), who hails from Finland and who was musically encouraged by his Aunt- who supplied him with free tickets to Helsinki Concervatorium, where he could fall under the spell of such masters as the great Segovia !! Dave Timmis (drums) also featured with the Ceramic City Stompers and the original OFLB—and is greatly influenced by George Wettling and Gene Krupa….. Catch ‘em all in foot-stomping action at the ‘Rock’ on Friday 20th June (admission is £5 at the door)---Make a note in your diaries and don’t miss out on such a super session!!

Traditional Jazz enthusiasts may also want to note the forthcoming 17th Dove Beer and Jazz Festival—scheduled to take place at Doveholes, Buxton, Derbyshire from Friday 4th to Sunday 6th July. Listed among the numerous attractions are Ken Sim’s Rhythm Kings, Amy Roberts New Orleans Quartet, Ged Hone’s Lewis/Colyer Band, The Savannah Jazzband, New Orleans Heat and many-many more!!
For further details phone 01298-814722 or log onto www.dovejazz.co.uk

Meanwhile don’t neglect our local music scene, where you can enjoy the joint attraction of special guest jazz singer Loretta Scott in the esteemed company of the Emmerson/ Spragg Combo at Doncaster Conservative Club on Monday 23rd June. The action begins around 8.30pm and admission is £3-50 at the door.

More pleasing news from local ‘ Just one more time’ Re-union gig organiser John Shillito is that another £142 has been donated to Cancer Research from sales of DVD’s and CD’s etc of the memorable occasion!!

Rotherham Transport Club presents Bob Ludlam’s 4 in a Bar (16th June) and The Old Fashioned Love Band (23rd June)….And Silkstone Lodge (Silkstone/Barnsley) have The Yorkshire Stompers (16th June) and Winston’s Pennine Jazz (23rd June)....Set for a Jubilee Concert in the hallowed surroundings of Doncaster Minster on 4th July is Doncaster Jazz Orchestra (Directed by John S M Ellis MBE) with guest soloists including Peter Beachill, Dennis Rollins, Andy Vinter, and Mark White. The concert begins at 7.30pm and tickets (£13 adults/ £10 conc’s/ £6-50 under 16’s) are available from Civic Theatre Box Office (01302-342349) and from Frenchgate Tourist Information Centre.

Happy jazzin!!

‘Jazz Scene’ for Thursday 5th June 2008. From C.J.Worsdale.

Glancing back to the recent Bank Holiday week-end, it’s encouraging and gratifying to note that both the Doncaster Civic Theatre concert by the Nick Ross Orchestra and Doncaster Markets Jazz Day were well attended and successful events.

Although the natural emphasis at the Civic concert leaned towards the timeless and well loved music of Glenn Miller, the mightily swinging Nick Ross Orchestra’s pleasingly varied repertoire also highlighted many other famed luminaries of the golden age of Swing—from the opening dynamic flag-waver Cherokee by Ray Noble (which was a hit for Charlie Barnett’s Band ) through salutes to Basie ,
Ted Heath ( with a superb fascinating arrangement of Colonel Bogey no less), Artie Shaw (Begin the Beguine) and others and with delightful vocal interludes from local lass Alice Coulham, who has previously guested at the ‘Con’ Club with Dickie Emmerson and Co and currently has a CD available (endorsed by presenter Malcolm Laycock no less!!) – to the inevitable rousing closing encore In the Mood, the marvellous musicians proved once again that Big Band Music (despite long past it’s hay-day) is alive and well!! All credit to theatre manager Kevin Johnson for staging the event—here’s to the next time!!

The Market’s Jazz Day was fortunately blessed by fine weather and proved to be a greatly enjoyable event for musicians, market shoppers, stall holders and organisers alike, with the general public obviously reacting favourably to the variety of enlivening sounds on offer in the market area, from Dave Brennan’s New Orleans Marching Band with the Jackie Everton Dancers ( who jointly received spontaneous applause from both shoppers and stall holders in the Market Hall), Winston’s Pennine Jazz—who kept the music hot as the temperature cooled towards the 3pm finale, joined by marching band members—and the surprise of the day, the vivacious Nicola Farnon Trio, who attracted a huge and enthusiastic crowd for their up-lifting session outside Primark….Including Nicola’s version of A sunny-cloudy day in Donny Town!!
(Hopefully, the DMBC Markets and Events Team will see fit to stage similar future events—Well done and grateful thanks for this one!!).

The live music continues this coming Saturday (7th June) when the Terry Allonby Trio will be in monthly action at the Fitzwilliam Arms fro 12 noon to 3pm. Joining guitar maestro Terry will be of course Nigel Chapman on keyboards and Mick Yates on drums….And perhaps surprise guest musos also!!

Following up on Monday 9th June at Doncaster Conservative Club is regular attraction the Emmerson/ Spragg Combo –featuring Dickie Emmerson on guitar and vocals and Tony Spragg (keyboards). Also usually adding finely crafted vocals to the proceedings are Sheila Peach, Bob Quinn and Eddie Kell.
(The Combo are back in action at the venue on Monday 23rd June, along with their special guest star jazz singer Loretta Scott—a regular at Jazz Festivals throughout the UK and on the Continent and on cruise liners also. Don’t miss the opportunity to catch her show less further afield in ‘sunny Donny’!!).

The will be only one session at the Rockingham Arms this month….And that’s on Friday 20th June when the attraction is the hugely popular Potteries based Old Fashioned Love Band, who boisterous trombonist and vocalist Mike Pembroke relates was formed following a ‘one-off’ session back in 2002 and have gone from strength to strength with an ever increasing and intriguing repertoire ever since!!
Joining Mike in fray will be Mel Hill (cornet/vocals); Mike Turner (reeds); Jake Reeves (banjo/guitar/vocals); Harry Forelius (double bass); and Dave Timmis (drums). Not to be missed by ‘Trad’ avids!!
Rotherham Transport Club presents New Orleans Heat (9th June) and Bob Ludlam’s 4 in a Bar (16th June)…..And at Silkstone Lodge ( Silkstone/Barnsley) is The Old Fashioned Love Band (9th June) and The Yorkshire Stompers (16th June)….. Big-Band fans can catch The Colin Yates Big Band with Pete Farmery (vocals) at The Venue, Manchester Road, Stocksbidge on Sunday 8th June (7.30pm)—Tickets £8 / £6 conc’s from Box Office 0114-2838692….And at Phoenix Sports & Social Club, Pavilion Lane, Brinsworth, Rotherham on Monday 9th June at 8pm / Admission £5 at the door. (01709-363788).

Happy jazzin’ !!

‘Jazz Scene’ for Thursday 22nd May 2008. From C.J.Worsdale.

An eventful Friday and Saturday are on the cards for jazz fans this coming week-end including a tempting treat for Swing Era avids on Friday evening ( 23rd May) at Doncaster Civic Theatre when the Nick Ross Orchestra will be thrillingly re-creating the much loved and nostalgic sounds of the famed bands of Glenn Miller, the Dorsey’s, Basie, Ellington, Artie Shaw , Ted Heath and no doubt many more such immortal luminaries besides!!

If the Classic Big Band Sounds of the 1940’s ( and beyond) are your favourites, then the Civic is the place to be. The show begins at 7.30pm and tickets can be reserved by phoning the Box Office on 01302-342349.

Set for concerts on both Friday and Saturday evenings at The Gate (Goole Arts Theatre/ Dunhill Road-Goole) is the ‘acoustic guitarist of his generation’ Martin Taylor no less, who is certain to dazzle and amaze the audience once more, with his remarkable stunning solo virtuosity. Both concerts begin at 8.pm and tickets can be reserved by calling the Box Office on 01405-763652.

Not to be missed by jazz lovers and shoppers alike is Doncaster Markets Jazz Day—which will take place between 11am and 3pm (approximately) on Saturday 24th May, with South Yorkshire’s ‘guru’ of New Orleans style jazz—Dave Brennan thumping out the beat on the big bass drum and leading his Jubilee New Orleans Brass Band (plus a bevy of dancing beauties from Jackie Everton’s Dance School!!) from Priory Walk and into the Market area , where they will entertain in typical boisterous Crescent City Marching Band fashion throughout the afternoon.

Also enlivening the proceedings will be ‘Trad’ band Winston’s Pennine Jazz ( including Greg Wadman on trumpet/ Eugene Farrar-trombone and the show-stopping ‘Rim-shot’ Rod McManara at the drums) and The Nicola Farnon Trio with the amazing Piero Tucci on keyboards ( and maybe saxes and accordion also), Phil Johnson pushing along the beat from his drum kit…And-of course-Nicola herself providing the swingin’ vocals and pulsating double bass playing. ( The two attractions will be performing alternating sets from the music gazebos sited at Goose Hill and near Primark). The event is free and is presented by the ‘Jazz into Doncaster’ voluntary committee in partnership with Doncaster Council….Have a great day y’all—and support ‘Donny’ Market and live music!!

The Emmerson/Spragg Combo is next in session at Doncaster Conservative Club on Monday 9th June—featuring local treasure Dickie Emmerson on guitar and vocals, Tony Spragg-keyboards, Tony Durkin-double bass and usually also with fine vocal contributions from Sheila Peach (nee Bennett—who sang with Acker Bilk back in the 60’s!!), Eddie Kell and Bob Quinn. ( The Combo is also in action at the same venue on Monday 23rd June—with special guest star jazz singer Loretta Scott—make a note of the date!!).

Set for another always welcome return session at the Rockingham Arms is Potteries based versatile and hugely entertaining ‘Trad’ outfit The Old Fashioned Love Band, who visit the venue on Friday 20th June….And also set for a return date is the ever popular Sheffield band The Dizzy Club—currently engaged for Friday 4th July, though this date may be changed to the 11th July—due to an unfortunate clash with DYJO’s special Anniversary Concert at Doncaster Minster also on 4th July (01302-320002 for details….We’ll keep you posted!!

Sad to note the recent passing of another revered modern jazz exponent—the great experimental clarinettist and saxophonist Jimmy Giuffre—who was perhaps best known as composer of ‘ Four Brothers’- which was a huge perennial hit for the Woody Herman Herd and featured the combined talents of Stan Getz, Zoot Sims, Herbie Steward and Serge Chaloff with a ‘new sound’ that remains strikingly undated even in present times!! Also few jazz enthusiasts can forget the hauntingly folksy rendition by The Jimmy Giuffre Trio ( with Bob Brookmeyer and Jim Hall) of ‘Train and the river’ in the classic ‘Jazz on a summer’s day’ film—made on location at the famed Newport (Rhode Island) Jazz Festival.

Barnsley Jazz at Silkstone Lodge (Cone Lane/Silkstone/Barnsley) presents Liverpool’s Blue Magnolia Jass Orchestra (26th May)—01226-281805/ 290105…And lastly a reminder that RotherhamTransport Club have NO JAZZ on the same night (Bank Holiday Monday)!!

Happy Jazzin’ !!

‘Jazz Scene’ for Thursday 15th May 2008. From C.J.Worsdale.

Thanks to the efforts of DMBC Markets & Events Team—in collaboration with the ‘Jazz into Doncaster’ voluntary committee—Doncaster Market area is set to resound to the vibrant Mardi-Gras like strains of a New Orleans style parade band and other hot and swingin’ sounds on Saturday 24th May.

Weaving their way amongst the busy stalls whilst ‘strutting their stuff’ in typical Crescent City fashion will the Jubilee New Orleans Brass band—led by the local doyen of New Orleans Jazz, Dave Brennan—who will be swapping his customary banjo for the big bass drum on this occasion!! And adding to the carnival atmosphere, the band will be followed by a bevy of dancing beauties from Jackie Everton’s School of Dance!!

And that’s not all, for due to entertain shoppers at the Goose Hill-Fish Market location, jazz fans and nearby stall-holders alike is the boisterous and versatile ‘Trad’ outfit Winston’s Pennine Jazz—which I’m informed by the band’s leader and double bass man Keith Shone, will include in it’s all-star ranks the highly visual and show-stopping drummer ‘Rim-shot’ Rod McManara no less!! Also set to delight is effervescent and glamorous jazz singer/double bassist Nicola Farnon, who will be delivering many favourite standards from the ‘Great American Song Book’ plus more recent quality songs and original material, with sterling support from the amazing Piero Tucci on keyboards/saxes/ and perhaps accordion too—with Phil Johnson providing the rhythmic impetus from his drum kit. (Nicola and the boys will be performing alternating sets around the corner from Pennine Jazz in the gazebo opposite Primark)…..Which all sounds like a stimulating and fun day for all—so be certain to be around to enjoy plenty lots of great music, while at the same time supporting Donny’s fine Market!!

Meanwhile, tomorrow night (Friday 16th May) the Rockingham Arms(Bennetthorpe) fully deserves a capacity crowd for another always more than welcome return to the venue of The Yorkshire Stompers

Happy Jazzin’!!

‘Jazz Scene’ for Thursday 8th May 2008. From C.J.Worsdale.

The shattering news of the recent tragic death of Humphrey Lyttelton—generally regarded and respected has Britain’s foremost champion of Jazz—will by now have reached every far flung outpost of the international music scene and left multitudes of fans old and new deeply saddened by the loss of the supremely multi-talented musician who enriched the lives of so many.

In addition to Humph’s famed trumpet and band leading abilities, he became the first jazz musician to enter the top twenty with a British Jazz record ( ‘Bad Penny Blues’ back in 1956), which stayed in the charts for six weeks…. “ Before falling back exhausted” as Humph would often joke!! He was also a skilled clarinettist, composer, calligrapher, arranger, author, cartoonist, and broadcaster—including presenting his ‘Best of Jazz’ Radio Two show for around forty years and chairing the cult humorous Radio Four ‘antidote to quiz shows’ ‘I’m sorry, I haven’t a clue’ for thirty years.( Also ‘Rock’ fans may be intrigued to learn that his band played for the younger generation in recent years—notably performing on Radiohead’s ‘Life in the glasshouse’ track in 2000 and joined the band in concert at Oxford in 2001 before a throng of thousands!!).

Humph was no stranger to South Yorkshire audiences, having on several occasions performed with his band at the Danum Jazz Club back in the 60’s, appeared in concert twice at Doncaster Civic Theatre, guested with The Shades of Jazz at Sprotbrough’s Ivanhoe plus other guest appearances with Dave Brennan’s Band in Rotherham. Also he was a regular star attraction at the Station Tavern in Huddersfield and other Yorkshire venues with the Savannah Jazz Band….Farewell, Humph—and thanks for brightening our often hum-drum existences!!

Mention of the Savannah Jazz Band reminds that former member and ‘hot’ cornet player Tony Smith
--who now fronts the Yorkshire Stompers—was a great friend admirer of Humph and was much influenced by his trumpet style (particularly in his earlier traditional outfits)….A fact you will be able to witness personally on Friday 16th May when Tony and the Stompers are in live session at the Rockingham Arms (Bennetthorpe/ Doncaster). The anticipated line-up in addition to Tony himself will be Frank Brooker (reeds/vocals); Richard Speight (banjo); Keith Shone (double bass); Terry Binns (drums/vocals); and introducing new regular band member Andy Hillier—who’s robust though articulate trombone playing his bound to help ‘raise the rafters’!!

Looking forward to Saturday 24th May, jazz fans and shoppers alike are set for a stimulating treat when Dave Brennan’s Jubilee New Orleans Brass Band—led by a typical Crescent City style Grand Marshall and with a ‘second-line’ bevy of dancing beauties (from Jackie Everton’s Dance School) expected to provide extra sparkle to the day—are set to enliven proceedings around the Market area between approximately 11am and 3pm. Also expected to add to the rhythmic sounds on offer are Trad band Winston’s Pennine Jazz…and perhaps a surprise or two!! Don’t miss out on such a fun day!!

Thanks to Dennis Rollins’ lovely ‘Mrs’ Danielle for providing news that trombone star Dennis and the band Empirical ( which recently performed at Central Park/Café Americana as part of Doncaster Hot House Festival) have been nominated in two categories each in this year’s Parliamentary Jazz Awards
--taking place on Tuesday 13th May and hosted by Paul Gambaccini at the Terrace Pavillion/ House of Commons. The categories are: Jazz Musician of the Year / Jazz Educator of the Year (Dennis) and Jazz CD of the Year / Ensemble of the Year (Empirical). Very best wishes for the best of outcomes!!

The popular attraction of The Emmerson/Spragg Combo—plus expected sterling contributions from Sheila Peach, The ‘Mighty’ Bob Quinn and Donny’s answer to Tony Bennett—Eddie Kell—are set to entertain once again at Doncaster Conservative Club on Monday 12th May (starting at 8.30pm/ admission £3 at the door)….The session is a fine way to start the week and drive away those Monday Blues!!

Jazz at Silkstone Lodge (Cone Lane/Silkstone-Barnsley) presents The Forest New Orleans Jazz Band
(plus free food!!) on Monday 12th May….Followed by The New Orleans Strollers with Suzanne on19thMay. (01226-281805 / 290105 / 383135)…..And there’s Jazz every Monday at Rotherham Transport Club (with different weekly attractions) and at the Butcher’s Arms Braithwell-with The Knights of Jazz (usually featuring Graham Galtrey /Pete Moxon
and/or Gerry Nugent on reeds). Put ‘em on your live Jazz itineries!!

Happy Jazzin’ !!

‘Jazz Scene’ for Thursday 24th April 2008. From C.J.Worsdale.

Nottingham based multi-reed jazz maestro Matt Palmer is a regular and most welcome visitor to Doncaster since his first appearances at the Salutation several years ago with his Millennium Jazz Band and has since fronted various combinations at The Little Theatre, Doncaster Catholic Club and of course at the Rockingham Arms—which he last played with his New Orleans Quartet last October.

Those fortunate enough to attend that highly memorable session will vividly recall with delight, the surprise introduction of the then 17 year old alto sax sensation Amy Roberts ( hailing from Cornwall and studying music at the Royal Northern College in Manchester), who at short notice jumped at the opportunity to join forces with Matt on clarinet and saxes plus Tom Kincade dazzling at the piano and Jim Swinnerton powerfully urging things along with his ‘Pops’ Foster influenced ‘slapped’ double bass approach….And the good news is that the same explosive combination is set for a return gig to the ‘Rock’ on Friday 2nd May!! (Make a note in your diaries and don’t miss out!!).

Also making her ‘Donny’ debut as impressive special star guest of The Terry Allonby Trio last October at the Fitzwilliam Arms was glamorous jazz singing stylist Karen Lake—who is kept busy in and around the Sheffield area, working with various bands—including her Lounge Lizards duos, trios and quartets to the Impressions Quintet and larger groups and will once again be star guest at the ‘Fitz’ with Terry and the boys on Saturday 3rd May ( 12 noon to 3pm/ admission free) when a wide variety of well chosen songs –ranging from gently swaying sambas and bossas to swingin’ standards and perhaps a repeat of her ‘gritty’ version of Van Morrison’s famed ‘Moondance.’

There will be no ‘Special’ guest session at the ‘Con’ Club during May….but it’s business as usual at the venue on Monday 12th May, when the resident Emmerson/Spragg Combo will once again be holding swingin’ court—no doubt aided and abetted by fine vocalists Eddie Kell, Sheila Peach and Bob Quinn…. And well worth noting are the Combo’s June gigs on Monday 9th and 23rd –when previous guest Loretta Scott will be once again joining the action!!

A recent family trip to Edinburgh to visit my brother Frank and family and to meet up with the ‘Stateside’ Worsdales ( Cabaret/Jazz singer Maggie , her husband Tom and his brother Jack and family friend Jane) also provided a chance to call on former Doncaster Free Press Jazz columnist/ bass guitarist/ and prime ‘mover and shaker’ on the South Yorkshire Jazz Scene for many years—Alan Marsh…who despite courageously battling against cancer, remains cheerfully enthusiastic about jazz matters as ever and draws great strength from listening to his favourite performers on record. Regretfully, Alan would find the journey to Doncaster too tiring, though sends his best regards to all his old friends and acquaintances in our area…and advises us all to ‘Keep Swingin!!’

Watch out for updates on Doncaster Markets Day of Jazz on Saturday 24th May—which so far expects to include Dave Brennan’s Jubilee Now Orleans Brass Band (plus Grand Marshall!!), The Terry Allonby Trio and Winston’s Pennine Jazz….And a further reminder is that the 3rd Newark Jazz Festival is set to take place from 16th to 18th May, featuring 70 performances venues—including pubs, Cafes, restaurants, and retail outlets (many of which are free). For more information call 01636-655765
or visit www.newarkjazz.co.uk

At Rotherham Transport Club on Monday 28th April are The Chicago Teddy Bears (01709-551478) and on the same evening at Silkstone Lodge (Cone Lane/Silkstone/Barnsley) is New Orleans Wiggle and ‘Topsy.’ (01226-281805/ 290105/ 383135)….With live jazz at both venues EVERY Monday!!
HAPPY JAZZIN’ !!

Jazz Scene’ for Thursday 17th April 2008. From C.J.Worsdale.

As the old adage goes….‘The best made plans of mice and men’ etc aptly describes the sad plight of former Doncaster pianist John ‘Buck’ Butler (now resident in London), who after instigating plans for last Sunday’s highly memorable ‘Just one more time’ jazz reunion bash at Doncaster Conservative Club, was regretfully himself unable to attend the event after apparently being struck by a severe bout of Sciatica—which at the ‘eleventh hour’ prevented him from travelling!!

John must have been distraught at being forced to miss such a great and praise worthy occasion in the Doncaster Jazz calendar (that was- after all- his ‘brainchild’), however he can draw consolation from the pleasing fact that the event was a huge success—with the almost none-stop action running smoothly along like clockwork—and delighted the around 150 capacity audience who packed out the venue and thoroughly enjoyed the veritable nostalgia laced plethora of swingin’ jazz on offer from so many fine musicians and singers….superbly compared by trombonist Mick Taylor (who recently joined the band ‘New Orleans Heat’ and may soon find himself kept busy touring the UK and the Continent!!), with ‘Buck’s’ local deputy and organiser John Shillito also adding his guidance to the proceedings.

Names of participants are far to many to include in full, though included the Vic Bevan Jazzband , Mike Taylor’s Jazzband ( including Carl Hemmingfield), and The Indiana Jazzband, (all joining forces for a grand finale ‘Jam session’!!), Dickie Emmerson’s Quartet, piano man ‘Big’ Bill Bickerton (memories of 50’s Horse & Groom sessions!!), and vocalists Sheila Peach, Shirley Patterson and Bob Quinn (‘Shirl’ and Bob evoking the great extrovert duo of Louis Prima and Keely Smith on the show-stopping version of ‘Bill Bailey’)….And not forgetting Jenny Allison (of Balby), who generously donated her late husband Geooff’s record collection and many historic photographs, which were transformed into CD’s and booklets for sale in aid of Parkinson’s and Cancer charities by John Shillito.
…..A fantastic time was had by musicians and audience alike, let’s hope it can be repeated again before too long!!

The regular well established monthly gig by the Terry Allonby Trio at the Fitzwilliam Arms-unsurprisingly- once again fared very well (despite Terry himself battling to ward off a threatening bout of imminent flu!!), drawing it’s customary large crowd of loyal supporters and new faces including the presence of a young group of contemporary dancers—no doubt attracted by the equally contemporary sounds on offer!! And news is that the delightful jazz singer Karen Lake—who gigged with Terry and the boys at the ‘Fitz’ last October—will be back again on Saturday 3rd May. (Make a note of the date!!).

Not faring as well—though deserving of a queue of fans stretching round the block!!—was Frank Brooker’s highly entertaining and musically talented band ‘The Happy Chappies’ at the Rockingham arms, which inexplicably attracted a disappointing meagre attendance, despite an intriguingly varied programme—ranging from the stirring opener ‘When you’re smiling’ to Greg Wadman’s fine take on ‘Humph’s famed ‘Bad Penny Blues’ (on his American 1918 vintage cornet!!) to the mad-cap vocal feature by banjo man Jim Wright on ‘When I’m cleanin’ windows.’ (George Formby with a jazz edge!!). A surprise ‘dep’ at the gig was bassist Steve Crocker, who was jazz presenter for ten years on Radio Hallam until 1990 and who mentioned a strong rumour that live Sunday lunch jazz may soon be resurrected at Sheffield’s Leadmill (fingers crossed)…and also told of lunchtime jazz at the Seven Arts
Centre (Chapel Allerton-Leeds/ 1 till 4pm. £3 entry/ kids free): Next up is Ronnie Bottomley’s Quintessionals (20th April), followed by the Joel Purnell Trio (27th April)….All are welcome!!

'Jazz Scene' for Thursday 3rd April 2008. From C.J.Worsdale.

Starting tomorrow evening with the more than welcome return to the Rockingham Arms at Bennetthorpe-Doncaster of multi-reed maestro Frank Brooker and his Leeds based band The Happy Chappies , a busy time is ahead over the next four days for the area's avid jazz enthusiasts!!

As the title implies, fans can fully expect a zestful blend of spirit raising fun and humour-generously laced with stimulating and swingin' sounds from versatile leader Frank and his fellow musicians. Sharing the 'spotlight' will be trumpeter and flugelhorn player Greg Wadman-back again at the 'Rock' after starring with Winston's Pennine Jazz only last Friday ( who has the highly and rare
ability to perform on two instruments at once!!); Jim Wright (banjo/vocals); Brian Crossland (double bass); and the show-stopping 'Rim shot' Rod McManara at the drums!! Expect to head homewards sporting broad satisfied grins after the final rousing number!! ( 'Stomp-off' is at 8.30pm and admission is £5 at the door).

Moving on to Saturday (5th April)…ever loyal fans will be making their monthly pilgrimage to the Fitzwilliam Arms (Shotton Walk/ Balby Bridge flats area) for the lunchtime session by the powerful and always surprisingly intriguing Terry Allonby Trio , where newcomers also are always warmly welcome to experience the 'Allonby Sound.' Joining the fray with guitar maestro Terry (as ever) will be keyboards wizard Nigel Chapman and powerhouse drummer Mick Yates…and maybe surprise guest musicians also. The session takes place from 12 noon to 3pm and admission is free.

Sunday's eagerly awaited 'Just one more time' Re-union session at Doncaster Conservative Club shows all the signs of being a total sell-out affair, though local organiser John Shillito is of the opinion that even those unable to obtain tickets should not be deterred and will be able to soak up the sounds and atmosphere emitting from the concert room and spilling out to the adjoining room-and perhaps will be able to be admitted as the show (scheduled from 1.30pm to 5.30pm) progresses. Kicking things off in boisterous style will be the specially re-formed Vic Bevan's Odega Jazzband (featuring Roger Myerscough on clarinet)….rapidly followed by Mike Taylor's Jazzmen, The Indiana Jazzband, with Dickie Emmerson, Terry Allonby, Graham Galtrey, John Butler all 'probable sitters-in' in a 'Mainstream' mode and also with Geoff Patterson, Big-Bill Bickerton, Shirley Patterson, Bob Quinn (and many more) also will be contributing to the auspicious occasion!! (Nostalgic jazzers will also be able to purchase or order CD's/ videos/photographs etc of their favourite bands and musicians of the Doncaster Jazz Scene of yesteryear-with all profits going to charity….and following the show, may wish to rub shoulders with many performers who are expected to congregate at the nearby Opera Restaurant-01302-769699-to reminisce and enjoy sumptuous Italian cuisine!!).

For those who have stayed the busy weekend course (and still have stamina in reserve), it's back to the 'Con' Club again on Monday evening (7th April) for the regular attraction of the Emmerson/Spragg Combo and guest singers Sheila Peach, Bob Quinn and Eddie Kell. (The combo plus special guest star vocalist Nicki Allen-who has previously 'wowed' the venue's audience with her infectious jazz singing style-will be in action again on Monday 21st April).

Whoops!! Apologies to fast rising young Warmsworth tenor saxist Nadim Teimori, who I recently wrongly referred to as winning 'Best' soloist award at the Sunderland Big Band Festival and which should have been 'Outstanding' soloist!! Also he will be commencing studies at The Royal Academy of Music in September-NOT the Royal School of Music!! Thanks to his mum Yvonne for pointing out the clangers!!

Barnsley Jazz (at Silkstone Lodge/Cone Lane/Silkstone ) presents a special with Phil Mason's New Orleans All-stars & Christine Tyrell on Monday 7th April and Peter Frank's Dixieland All-stars on Monday 14th April (01226-281805/ 290105/ 383135) ….And Rotherham Transport Club have Peter Frank's Dixieland All-stars (7th April) and The Richard Leach 7 Stars of Jazz (14th April). Phone 01709-551478 for further info.

Last-but defiantly not least-numerous relatives, friends, jazz associates and representatives from 'Guide Dogs for the Blind' gathered together last Thursday at Rose Hill Crematorium-Cantley-to bid a poignant 'farewell' to Dave Payne of Balby (and formerly of Tickhill) who recently tragically died unexpectedly following a sudden illness. Dave was a well loved pillar of the community, renowned for his tireless fund raising for guide dogs and his involvement in jazz promoting. Dave's ever cheerful and enthusiastic persona will be missed by many and our thoughts must also be with his devoted wife Leila, who is herself currently admitted to Sheffield Hallamshire Hospital suffering from serious illness, and to his son Tim and other family members .

'Jazz Scene' for Thursday 20th March 2008. From C.J.Worsdale.

Radio jazz avids will be dismayed to learn that 'Humph' Lyttelton's long running 'Best of Jazz' Radio Two show-that has graced the airwaves for over forty years and was essential listening for jazz aficionados-has finally ended, marking the close of a glorious era of broadcasting.

Thanks 'Humph' for the abundance of varied and informative listening pleasure that we have enjoyed across the decades, opening continually fresh avenues and broadening musical experiences in the process-long may you continue to swing with your own superb band on the jazz club and concert circuit….And optimistically, perhaps 'Auntie' Beeb in their wisdom may introduce a suitable series to fill the gaping breach. (Fingers crossed!!).

Also apparently disappearing from DAB Digital Radio at the end of March is the trail blazing 24 hour 'the jazz' show….Though all is not completely lost, as those able can log on to My Classic FM.Com and register to receive the new 24 hour/ 7 days a week show that will replace the previous one-and on Classic FM Radio presenter Helen Mayhew will shortly commence her own 2 hour jazz slot at weekends from midnight to 2am-if you fancy burning the midnight jazz oil that is!!

Whilst on the subject of radio, there are lots more jazz and blues goodies to be found with patient 'twiddles of the dial' - not least Paul Jones' Monday night Radio Two Blues show, Tommy Saville's two hour Thursday evening show on BBC Radio Nottingham/Lincoln, Geoffrey Smith's Radio Three show Jazz Record Requests (usually around Saturday tea-time) , with Jazz Line-up also on Saturday afternoon on Radio Three and Big Band Special-presented by Clare Teal-on Mondays at 10pm on Radio Two…and lots more besides- so get those radios tuned in for hours of great music!!

On the local live scene… Next up at the Rockingham Arms (Bennetthorpe) on Friday 28th March is the versatile West Yorkshire based band Winston's Pennine Jazz , led by double bassist and founder Keith Shone-who fields the strong and entertaining team of Greg Wadman (trumpet/flugelhorn); Eugene Farrar (trombone/ sousaphone/ harmonica/vocals); Andy Wallis (clarinet/saxes); Brian 'Elvis' Herbert
--who many will recall gracing the fine band of the late Jim Wilkes-on banjo/guitar/ vocals (sometimes in French!!); and with Ken Hickey driving along the rhythm at the drums-and also perhaps adding a vocal or two. Stomp-off is at 8.30pm/ admission £5 at the door. ( Lined up for gigs at the 'Rock' in April are Frank Brooker's Happy Chappies on the 4th and newcomers with a fast growing reputation Emily Druce and Dizzy Fingers on the 18th-get the dates in your diaries!!).

Further new of the forthcoming 'Just one more time' Re-union bash at the 'Con' Club on Sunday 6th April is that kicking off the proceedings at 1.30pm will be Vic Bevan's Odega Jazz Band-which includes clarinettist Roger Myerscough, who will be leaving afterwards to join up with Phil Mason's New Orleans All-stars at a later session-so those wishing to catch Roger in action are advised to be early…Following on from the Odega will be Bryan Hetherington's Louisiana Jazz Band, Mike Taylor's Jazzmen (with Carl Hemingfield), Alan Hippsley & the Indiana Jazz Band and lots-lots more-with NO INTERVAL between!! Admission is £5 (phone 01302-810005 for tickets).

Further news of the Newark Jazz Festival-taking place over the weekend of 16th to 18th May-is that the event will feature around 70 performances in 30 venues ( with entry to many free of charge) and will include such luminaries as Claire Martin in intimate concert with Sir Richard Rodney Bennett; The Big Chris Barber Band; current holders of the BBC Jazz Album of the Year-The Neil Cowley Trio; and Gospel singer Shirley Alexander (from New Orleans) with Brian Carrick's Band. (For more info phone 01636-655765 or log onto www.newarkjazz.co.uk ).
Looking even further ahead…. Doncaster Markets Jazz Day has been given the green light and is set to take place on Bank Holiday Saturday 24th May. Already confirmed to create the joyful atmosphere of a New Orleans Parade around the market area is South Yorkshire's doyen of Crescent City style jazz Dave Brennan and his Jubilee Brass Band. Further attractions will be announced as they are finalised-watch out for up-dates!! (Dave's Jubilee Jazz Band is in Wednesday residency at Wickersley's Three Horseshoes ).

Meanwhile….A further reminder to Rotherham Transport Club regulars is that there is NO JAZZ on Monday 24th March-though the venue is back in action on Monday 31st March with Mart Rogers' Manchester Jazz….And at Silkstone Lodge (Cone Lane/Silkstone-Barnsley) is The Heart of England Jazz Band-including Easter Parade-on 24th March (£5 entry); with The Le Harpe St Jazzmen on 31st March…..Not forgetting that recent Rockingham Arms visitors, the 7 piece Silver Leaf Jazz Band are in action every Wednesday evening at Strafford Arms-Stainborough-near Barnsley, where they have been in popular residency since their inaugural gig at the pub fourteen years ago in October 1993!!
Why not put the venue on your live 'Trad' jazz itinerary ??

Happy Jazzin'!!

‘Jazz Scene’ for Thursday 21st February 2008. From C.J.Worsdale.

Next month’s local live jazz events are set to make a flying start on Saturday 1st March with The Terry Allonby Trio’s always eagerly awaited monthly session at The Fitzwilliam Arms (Shotton Walk/Balby Bridge flats area), that as been attracting ever swelling attendances of late and where loyal and fervent regular fans—plus recent new converts to the ‘Allonby Experience’—can rely on a stimulating afternoon of varied and eclectic kaleidoscopic sounds and rhythms.

Standing out among the numerous gems at last month’s gig was an excitingly swinging up-tempo outing by Terry (guitar), Nigel (keyboards) and Mick at the drums of the Allonby original ‘Toby’s Twelve’ – featuring thrilling nerves edge exchanges and casually (and modestly) referred to by Terry as a “ Bluesy, swingy thing”!! (Actually the number would not have been out of place at a famed ‘Jazz at the Phil’ concert, and hopefully will be repeated again before long!!). The session takes place between 12 noon and 3pm and admission remains free—see you all there!!

Also a well established local jazz institution are sessions at the Conservative Club ( South Parade), with the next gig set for Monday 4th March and which features the Emmerson/Spragg Combo and regular guest singers Sheila Peach, Bob Quinn and Eddie Kell usually contributing many a fine song throughout the evening…Not forgetting superbly crafted guitar solos and vocals from ‘local treasure’ Dickie Emmerson, pianistic wizardry from Tony Spragg, superb under-pinning double bass lines by Tony Durkin and the rhythmic pulse of Kelvin Jones at the drums. (The show begins around 8.30pm and admission is £3).

Friday 7th March presents something of a dilemma for jazzers with wide tastes…As on the same evening stomping ‘Trad’ jazz by the seven piece Barnsley based Silver Leaf Jazzband (no doubt once again spotlighting the barnstorming clarinet duets of husband and wife team David and Liz Hepworth and muscular hot and hybrid blues saturated trumpet style of John Pashley) will be the order of the day at the Rockingham Arms (Bennetthorpe/Doncaster—8.30pm/ £5 at the door)…While across town at the Woolpack will be rapidly rising young star band of the contemporary scene Empirical, who are renowned for their creativity and have appeared at the North Sea Jazz Festival and many other highly prestigious venues. Individually they have worked with some of the most notable names in jazz—including Doncaster’s very own Dennis Rollins (who himself appears alongside super sax man Alan Barnes and all-star band at the Crucible on 13th March in a benefit concert of the great music of Charles Mingus), Courtney Pine, Soweto Kinch and Tim Garland among others. (Phone Box Office: 01302-342349 for tickets/details or check out Empirical on www.myspace.com/empiricalmusic )....Also on Friday 7th March tenor sax supremo Bobby Wellins & His Quartet ( renowned for his contribution to the critically acclaimed album ‘ Under Milk Wood Suite’ by Stan Tracey’s Quartet) an known as ‘The keeper of the be-bop flame’ will be in concert at the Millennium Hall in Sheffield . For details of this gig and other Sheffield Jazz presentations phone 0114-273-8678 or visit www.sheffieldjazz.org.uk

Received to late for inclusion in last week’s column was regrettable news from trumpeter/band leader Colin Yates that his Big Band gigs at Sheffield’s Polish Club—set for 12th March and 9th April will NOT now take place, due to the closure of the venue…
Though good news is that the concert at Barnsley’s The Lamp Room Theatre is well and truly on for Sunday 16th March at 7.30pm!! (Phone Colin on 01709-523238 for further info).

Barnsley Jazz at Silkstone Lodge (Cone Lane/Silkstone) presents Peter Franks’ Dixieland All-stars on Monday 25th February (01226-281805/290105)…And on the same evening at Rotherham Transport Club is The Old Fashioned Love Band (01709-
562943)….Meanwhile at Sheffield’s Showroom this coming Sunday lunchtime, you can catch Chris Walker (guitar) and Piero Tucci (piano/saxes) in duo action. (0114-249-5479

Happy Jazzin’!!

‘Jazz Scene’ for Thursday 14th February 2008. From C.J.Worsdale.

Perhaps the reason was the forecast of severe wintry conditions, or maybe the rare event of several hours of top-drawer jazz on BBC 4 television that deterred many loyal and ardent fans from attending the recent ‘Blues Connection’ gig at the Rockingham Arms.

Whatever the explanation, the live session was—despite sterling varied and sincere performances by the gifted trio—regrettably and undeservedly sparsely supported on the night by a small but discerning and appreciative audience.

The threesome’s repertoire included many highlights and numerous sources of inspiration—from Robert Johnson, Big Bill Broonzy and Sonny Terry and Brownie McGhee to Doc Watson, Bonnie Raitt, Memphis Minnie , Blind Blake and Muddy Waters (who’s famed anthem ‘Hoochie Coochie Man’ provided the rousing closer to the evening) and featured the wailing harmonica of Bob ‘Lightning lips’ Reid (who has only been playing publicly for around six years) on his own composition ‘Blues Man,’ along with the nimble fingered country blues and ragtime picking of Pete Wray and-of course-the heartfelt sonorous vocals of Helen Wray…Her rendition of ‘You can’t have too much love and kindness’ being particularly apt to mention on Saint Valentine’s Day and a worthy yardstick for us all in these troubled times!! All of which was deserving of a packed house—which surely should always be the case (whatever the attraction) with a population the size of Doncaster area to provide the patronage!!

The position is fully expected to be reversed tomorrow evening (Friday 15th Feb), when the strident and robust New Orleans style strains of the famed Savannah Jazzband will be setting feet well and truly tapping at the ‘Rock’—stomping-off at 8.30pm.(£5 entry).
Leading the band will be John Meehan (originally inspired by Gene Krupa) at the drums
--who will be joined by Temperance Seven trumpeter John Tucker, clarinettist Geoff Patterson, Brian ‘Sam’ Ellis on trombone, Tony Pollitt (double bass) and Richard Speight—renowned for his long spells with The Yorkshire Post Jazzband –on banjo…
A perfect recipe for a rafters raising night of ‘Trad’ jazz—Don’t be late!!

Plenty to choose from locally on Friday 7th March….with The Silver Leaf Jazzband in action at the Rockingham Arms, fast rising stars of contemporary jazz ‘Empirical’—who featured on last week’s Entertainer cover—at The Woolpack (as part of the Hothouse Festival—phone 01302-342349) and tenor sax titan Bobby Wellins’ Quartet at the Crucible (Music in the Round—0114-249-6000).

Advance news from former ‘Donny’ piano man John ‘Buck’ Butler (now based in London) of the forthcoming ‘Just one more time’ jazz spectacular reunion at the Conservative Club on Sunday 6th April…The show will take place from 1.30pm till 5.30pm and will include such luminaries as Vic Bevan’s Jazzband, Indiana Jazzband, Mike Taylor(trumpet), Dickie Emmerson, Bob Quinn, Carl Hemingfield, ‘Big Bill’ Bickerton, Roger Myerscough, Geoff Patterson, trombonist Mick Taylor, Terry Allonby, Graham Galtrey and of course ‘Buck’ himself at the piano—plus many, many more!!
(A full list of artists will be published leading up to the event—for which tickets are £5,with all profits to Charity ). Watch out for regular up-dates!!

More advance news is of the Newark Jazz Festival which takes place from 15th to 18th May and which attracted around 9,000 fans last year. Once again the range of attractions is simply mind boggling - info is to follow at regular intervals, though those to eager to wait can phone 01636-655765 or log onto www.newarkjazz.co.uk

Trumpeter/band leader Colin Yates informs that his Big Band will be in swingin’ action at the Polish Club-Sheffield on Wednesday 12th March and Wed 9th April and also at The Lamp Room Theatre-Barnsley/ 7.30pm on Sunday 16th March. For further info-phone Colin on 01709-523238….And at Silkstone Lodge/Barnsley on Monday 18th Feb is Mart Rodger’s Manchester Jazz (£5 at the door/01226-281805)… With Emily Druce & Dizzy Fingers at Rotherham Transport Club on the same evening.

Happy Jazzin’ !!

‘Jazz Scene’ for Thursday 7th February 2008. From C.J.Worsdale.

An all too rare recent visit to The Gate (Goole Arts Theatre), tempted by the appearance in concert at the venue of North East based ‘Hot Club of France’ styled group ‘Djangology’ could not have been more appropriate—coinciding as it did with the 100th
Anniversary of the birth of the one-and-only Stephane Grappelli and featuring the hot and swinging Grappelli inspired violin virtuosity of the highly gifted Emma Fisk—to help celebrate the auspicious occasion!!

Obviously, the music of jazz giants Django Reinhardt and Stephane Grappelli can never be equalled (with numerous combinations still aspiring to emulate the masters of Parisian Gypsy Swing), though it was immensely enjoyable to witness young players Emma, along with dexterous guitarists Dave Harris and Paul Donnelly, plus double bassist Mick Shoulder so expertly tackling such intricate and challenging well loved material—plus several fine new self penned pieces and vividly evoking such a glorious bygone era of jazz…Watch out for visits to our locality by ‘Djangology’—future opportunities to catch them in live action should not be missed!! (Meanwhile, check ‘em out on www.djangology.org.uk).

Good to receive a welcome letter from jazz, swing and brass band trombonist and band leader Mike Mackinder (also renowned for his Tommy Cooper-like dry humour: “Is a b natural something you try in vane to do on stage?”) —who of late has been conspicuously absent from the local live jazz scene (with the exception of a recent visit to the Terry Allonby Trio’s monthly gig at the ‘Fitz.’ Mike tells of-and thoroughly recommends- a recent trip on the Euro Star to Brussels and adventures in the Music Village jazz bars, where-he says-world class jazz can be enjoyed for around 12 Euros!!
Great to hear from you Mike…even better to see you round and about again with your trusty ‘kid-shifter’- how about it ?

Next live session at the Rockingham Arms (Bennetthorpe) is set for Friday 15th February and features the ever popular Savannah Jazzband, led by John Meehan on drums along with Kid Ory inspired trombonist Brian ‘Sam’ Ellis, Temperance Seven musician John Tucker on trumpet, Geoff Patterson (clarinet), Tony Pollitt (double bass), and Richard Speight (banjo)….And no doubt the hawk-eyed spotted the ‘deliberate error’ in last week’s column—the gig by Matt Palmer’s New Orleans Quartet with Amy Roberts, takes place on Friday 2nd May—NOT 18th April (when Emily Druce and Dizzy Fingers will be making their ‘Rock’ debut)…Take note of the change!!

Over in Sheffield for Sunday lunchtime sessions at The Showroom (opposite the Railway Station-to the left) are pianist Bill Sutton & saxist Rob Skeet (Feb 10th), the superb jazz singer/bassist Nicola Farnon in the company of Anthony Kinsey—who reportedly sings with the charisma of Jamie Cullum and hip sophistication of Harry Connick Jnr and also excels at the piano and saxophone (Feb 10th), and the great team
of guitarist Chris Walker and Piero Tucci (piano/saxes) on 24th Feb. (0114 249 5479).

Monday 11th February sees Bad Boy Bobby Ludlam’s Band at Silkstone Lodge (Cone Lane, Silkstone, Barnsley (with Mart Roger’s Manchester Jazz on the 18th Feb)…and at Rotherham Transport Club on the same evening are Papa Joe’s All-stars (with Emily Druce & Dizzy Fingers set for 18th Feb).

Jazz loving visitors to London may well wish to visit the National Portrait Gallery, where an exhibition of jazz photographs by renowned camera man Walter Hanlon is on view until 20th July (so plenty time to plan!!)…And watch out for publication of Walter’s book ‘1950s Jazz in London and Paris.’

Happy jazzin’ !!

‘Jazz Scene’ for Thursday 24th January 2008. From C.J.Worsdale.

Not to be outdone by heart-warming and encouraging starts to 2008 by Terry Allonby’s
Trio at the ‘Fitz’ and the Emmerson/Spragg Combo at the ‘Con’ Club, the first New Year jazz gig by The Bob and James Ludlam Quartet at the Rockingham Arms also ‘hit the ground running’—attracting a full house and providing a super evening’s entertainment.

Although a small minority of overheard dissenting comments stated a preference for more instrumentals, rather than quite so many vocal features (as fine as they were), the enviable all-star line-up of trumpeter Bob, his son James on keyboards, together with bassist and singer Nicola Farnon and the nimble fingered Chris Walker on guitar and banjo skilfully balanced elements of musicianship, showmanship and well crafted vocals from all band members…Including items as diverse as ‘Autumn Leaves’, Hoagy Carmichael’s ‘Georgia’ (a feature for James in tribute to Ray Charles), ‘Them There Eyes’, Bob’s affectionate and un-canny take (on trumpet and vocal) of ‘Satchmo’ himself on ‘Please Don’t Talk About Me,When I’m Gone’, to the rousing finale-plus audience participation on the chorus- of the appropriate ‘Hit The Road, Jack’ ( another Ray Charles huge hit with the ‘Raelets’), which left the crowd applauding enthusiastically and yelling for more!! (Hopefully, Bob and the gang will be back in ‘Donny’ again before to long…But meanwhile you can check out his numerous appearances by logging on to www.bobludlam.com ).

Next up at the ‘Rock’ on Friday 1st February is Lincoln based threesome ‘The Blues Connection’ ( featuring Helen Wray-vocals; Pete Wray-guitar/vocals; and Bob Reid-harmonica/vocals). Should you be one of those who considers the Blues a depressing and downhearted genre, you’ll soon change you mind by popping along and enjoying the uplifting and positive nature of the ‘Connection’s’ performance!! (Also, few can dispute the fact that the Blues forms the bed-rock of Jazz, R n’B, Rock music and virtually all other forms of popular music too.).

News from Savannah Jazz Band leader and drummer John Meehan is that the line up at the ‘Rock’ on Friday 15th February is expected to be himself (of course!!), John Tucker (of the Temperance Seven) on trumpet; Brian ‘Sam’ Ellis: trombone; great local favourite Geoff Patterson: clarinet; Tony Pollitt: double bass; and Richard Speight—who many will recall with Dennis Armstrong’s various bands and The Yorkshire Post Jazzband—standing in on banjo for Louis Lince, who enviably will be in New Orleans at the time!! ( Fast forwarding to April 18th, ‘Jazz into Doncaster’ stalwart Leila Payne has secured the services of sensational jazz and blues singer Emily Druce along with Yorkshire based band ‘Dizzy Fingers’—who collectively promise to transport us back to the 30’s and 40’s , those lively eras of Django Reinhardt, Stephane Grappelli and Parisian style swing….Make a note of the date!!).
Whilst on the subject of Django…Well worth the trip to The Gate (Goole Arts Theatre) on Saturday 26th January, is the concert by ‘Djangology’—compising of session musician Dave Harris and ex-NYJO member Paul Donnelly (guitars); Emma Fish (violin); and Mick Shoulder (double bass). The show begins at 8pm (Box Office: 01405-763652)….And more locally, The Terry Allonby Trio are in lunchtime action at the Fitzwilliam Arms (Balby Bridge flats area) on Saturday 2nd February ( 12 noon to 3pm/ admission free)….With The Emmerson/Spragg Combo in session at the Conservative Club ( South Parade/Doncaster) on Monday 4th February (8.30pm/ £3 entry).

Barnsley Jazz (at Silkstone Lodge) presents Dave Brennan’s Jubilee Jazzband (4th Feb),
And Rotherham Transport Club have The Heart of England Jazzband on the same night.
(Both events starting at 8.30pm).

Finally…. High praise indeed for ace local jazz drummer Errol Rollins (brother of famed trombone stars Dennis and Winston)—currently with Disco/Soul/Funk styled band ‘Pop Korn’-- from fellow drummer with ‘Rock Legacy’-Shaun Farmer ( a work colleague of mine and no drumming ‘slouch’ himself!! ), who raved about Errol’s phenomenal skills at the drum kit after catching the band in recent live action.

Happy Jazzin’ !!

‘Jazz Scene’ for Thursday 17th January 2008. From C.J.Worsdale.

Undoubtedly, Canada’s finest contribution to the international jazz scene was the truly great pianist and composer Oscar Peterson, who sadly died two days before Christmas at age 82 and who was among the relatively small band of jazz musicians to successfully span boundaries to become a household name beyond the sphere of his chosen genre.

Oscar began playing at the early age of six and after winning a talent competition at fourteen, soon found himself making radio broadcasts—rapidly followed by recordings for Canadian RCA ad offers to join impresario Norman Granz’s famed ‘Jazz at the Phil’ package at New York’s Carnegie Hall in 1949. The rest-as they say-is history, and although Oscar’s innumerable faithful fans can no longer marvel at the awe inspiring swinging keyboard dexterity and emotional depth of his live performances, they can at least re-live past glories through the countless superb recordings that constantly remain available….Every self respecting jazz avid should have Peterson albums in their collections!! Adieu, Oscar.

Other major jazz musicians to recently join the ‘great jam session in the sky’ include saxophonist and disciple of Charlie ‘Bird’ Parker, Frank Morgan—who was championed by and recorded with trumpet great Wynton Marsalis…And baritone sax man Cecil Payne, who was equally respected in Modern Jazz and Rhythm & Blues circles (and who’s achievements were recently highlighted of Paul Jones’s regular Monday evening Radio Two Blues programme—tune in at 7pm!!). The loss of both musicians leave gaping voids in the international music scene.

On a happier note, hearty congratulations to Modern Jazz ‘elder statesman’ Stan Tracey— the highly revered pianist/vibraphonist/composer/arranger—who has been awarded the CBE in the New Year Honours List…And welcome back to the air-waves ‘Humph’ Lyttelton, who presents ‘Best of Jazz’ on Radio Two at 10.30pm on Mondays
--essential listening for jazz avids!!

On the live scene, this Friday evening 18th January (NOT Saturday as wrongly stated in a recent article—whoops, gremlins about!!) sees British Modern Jazz pianist great John Taylor’s Trio and guest saxophonist Julian Arguelles in ‘Music in the Round’ concert at Sheffield’s Crucible Theatre—7.45pm (Box office: 0114-249-6000)….And rapidly rising young contemporary band ‘Empirical’ are at Sheffield’s Millennium Hall on 25th January at 8.30pm: Box office: 0114-273-8678…And are also set for a gig at the Woolpack (that’s in ‘Donny’ by the way—not Emmerdale!!) on Friday 7th March, as part of the Hothouse Festival.

Next up at the Rockingham Arms (Bennetthorpe) on Friday 1st February is Lincoln based trio ‘The Blues Connection’—who have performed on several occasions in the area, including previous Rockingham and Salutation gigs, twice at the Markets Jazz Day, and in the ‘Story of the Blues’ show at the Little Theatre. The versatile group’s repertoire features country and city blues—dating from Ma’ Rainey and Bessie Smith , via Broozy and Muddy Waters to Eric Bibb and other recent influences, alongside Ragtime guitar features and originals by vocalist Helen Wray (who’s voice-in my humble opinion-compares favourably to Ottilie Patterson) and her guitarist husband Pete….not forgetting ‘wailing’ blues harp from Bob ‘Lightnin Lips’ Reid !! (‘Trad’ fans are also in for a treat on Friday 15th February at the ‘Rock’ when the ever popular Savannah Jazzband will be in stomping action!!).

First new year gigs by Terry Allonby’s Trio at the ‘Fitz’ and The Emmerson/Spragg Combo at Doncaster Conservative Club both got off to flying (and encouraging starts), with the ‘Con’ Club audience probably being it’s best attended to date…and which included the surprise bracing guest performance of multi-instrumentalist Tommy Tuft( all the way from equally ‘bracing’ Skegness!!). Also contributing finely honed vocals to the proceedings were Johnny Noble, Eddie Kell and Bob Quinn—his strident rendition of St.Louis Blues transforming the band to a muscular sounding Blues outfit!!
( Next sessions at the ‘Fitz’ and the ‘Con’ Club are on 1st and 4th February respectively ).

Barnsley Jazz (at Silkstone Lodge) have The Yorkshire Stompers (14th Jan) and Willy’s Weepers (21st Jan)—01226-281805….And at Rotherham Transport Club is The Keith Peters Big Band (14th Jan) and Peter Franks’ Dixieland All-stars (21st Jan):01709-551478.

Happy Jazzin’ !!
